I feel like this is the beginning of a support group.

“Hi, my name is Mindee Forman, and I’m green…”

“HI, Mindee!!”

I like to think that I’m green, anyway, whatever that means. I know I can do better (there’s always room for improvement), but I try. I graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA in 1996 with a B.A. in Theatre. I’m now in my second semester at KU Edwards in the Marketing Communications graduate program.

I moved to Kansas City just over three years ago with my then-fiance-now-husband Graham. We live in Brookside with our 13-month-old daughter Claire, our two dogs, and our cat. Claire has her own blog that I maintain, if you’re interested. She’s pretty ridiculously cute, if I do say so myself.

I work part-time at the Kauffman Foundation as a Research Analyst and spend my other part-time-time momming and volunteering at my church, where I’m the chairperson of our Green Team. (We’re a new group, but we have lofty goals.) Before moving to Kansas City I lived in Los Angeles and worked in the TV/Film industry as an assistant director. Let me tell you, despite what individual celebrities do and say, the industry as a whole is NOT green. I have hope, but they have a long way to go.

I look forward to learning how to communicate better with others regarding all things green.

I’m a relative newbie in KU’s Marketing Communications program, having just started my first course (Marketing Fundamentals) this semester. I graduated from KU with a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism in 1996. I then worked in the TV news business (as a sports anchor/reporter) for about five years, first at KSNT in Topeka, then at Sunflower Cablevision in Lawrence.

I’ve been with Crown Center Redevelopment Corp. in Kansas City, Mo. for seven years now. In my capacity as the communications manager, I handle public and media relations, oversee the website and work on various marketing endeavors.

This “Communicating Green Initiatives” course is one I’m very much looking forward to. All companies, whether they realize it or not, have an opportunity (and responsibility) to lessen their impact on the environment. Effective communication with employees and stakeholders is a big part of the battle.

: School & Work :
I am in my fourth semester of the Marketing Communications program at KU and plan to graduate in the fall of 2009. My undergraduate degrees come from Truman State University and are in Communication and Business Marketing. My current employer is iModules, which is a technology company that deals primarily in the education sector and provides software for online communication. We are in the beginning stages of planning a green campaign to educate our clients and prospects on how to “go green” in their office. Because our products and services allow our clients to move their communication to an online format, a green campaign ties in nicely with our marketing message.

: Other Interests :
Since my years in undergraduate school, I have been highly involved in lindy hop swing dance. I am the cofounder of the Kansas City Lindy Hop Society, a nonprofit organization focused on promoting and educating the greater Kansas City area on African American Vernacular Jazz Dances of the 1920s-1940s. Within this community, I am a teacher, social dancer, DJ, and event planner. Tied to this interest is my passion for 1920-40s jazz and blues, soul, and motown. In the future, I hope to pursue these interests in my professional life in a way that allows me to mix my professional skills with my passions.

Growing up with a teacher for a parent, I have always had a keen sense for education; thus, after completing my masters, I also intend to pursue teaching opportunities in programs similar to KU’s Marketing Communications program.
